Is this suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. New Year, New Twi is built for people starting from nothing. You don’t need to know a single word, and many of our students arrive having never said anything in Twi out loud.
What if I already understand some Twi but can’t speak it?
You’re describing the most common situation our students arrive with. You follow the conversation, you know what you want to say, and then it won’t come out. Start with New Year, New Twi. If you’re already building your own sentences, Ka Kakra will suit you better.
How do the live lessons work?
Lessons run live on Zoom with your tutor and your cohort, once a week for eight weeks. Lessons last no more than 60 minutes. You’ll also have a midweek YBK speaking session with your small group.
How many students are in each class?
Cohorts stay deliberately small, and your YBK speaking group is capped at five. In a group of five you can’t sit quietly at the back, which is the point.
What if I miss a lesson?
Every lesson is recorded and uploaded to your Student Hub, so you can catch up in your own time. Life happens. Missing one week doesn’t put you behind.
What’s included?
Eight weeks of live lessons with a Ghanaian tutor, a weekly YBK speaking group of no more than five, access to the Student Hub with every lesson recording, and a weekly speaking challenge.
Do I get access to the recordings?
Yes. Every lesson goes into your Student Hub so you can rewatch anything you want to go over again. You have unlimited access to the Student Hub for 2 months after the cohort ends.
How much speaking is actually involved?
A lot, from week one. Every lesson includes roleplays where you step into a real situation, an auntie at the market, a seller, a family member. That’s not a warm-up exercise, it’s how the whole thing is taught.
Do I get homework?
No. We don’t set homework at Teach Me Twi. You’ll get a weekly YBK challenge instead, which is a small speaking task tied to that week’s lesson. You practise by speaking, not by filling in worksheets.
How do I practise between lessons?
Your YBK group keeps going through the week on WhatsApp with voice notes and messages, plus a live speaking session. That’s where most of the confidence actually gets built.
What comes after New Year, New Twi?
Three routes, depending on what you need. Ka Kakra if you’re ready to push into longer conversations. The Refinement Lab if you want to keep drilling what you’ve already got. YBK on its own if you simply want to keep speaking regularly.
What is Ka Kakra?
Our A2 experience, and a genuine step up. Eight weeks with a smaller group and a faster pace, aimed at reducing how much you lean on English and getting you holding real conversations.
What is YBK?
Yɛn Bɔ Nkɔmmɔ means “let’s have a conversation.” It’s our speaking community rather than a course. A weekly live session in a group of no more than five, matched by confidence level, plus daily practice on WhatsApp.
Can I keep learning with you long term?
That’s the idea. Most people move from New Year, New Twi into either Ka Kakra or YBK, and many keep a YBK membership running alongside whatever else they’re doing so they never stop speaking.
Before you decide.
The things people wonder about but don’t always ask. Here’s where we stand on all of them.
Why not just use a language app?
Start with the obvious problem: Duolingo doesn’t teach Twi at all. A few apps do, and they’re useful for vocabulary. But an app can’t hear that your tone is wrong, can’t answer when you ask why, and can’t sit with you while you try a sentence for the third time. Speaking is a thing you do with people.
I’ve tried before and given up. Why would this be different?
Because last time nobody noticed you stopped. Here you’re in a group of five who see you every week, a tutor who knows your name, and a WhatsApp group that carries on between sessions. Most people don’t quit language learning because it’s hard. They quit because it’s lonely.
Why are your classes intentionally small?
Because speaking time is the entire product. In a class of twenty you might say three sentences in an hour. In a group of five you can’t avoid speaking, and your tutor can actually correct your tone rather than letting mistakes settle in.
Do I need Ghanaian parents to learn Twi?
No. Many of our students have Ghanaian roots and plenty don’t. Some are learning for a partner, a friend, or a trip they’ve been planning for years. Nobody will ask you to justify why you’re here.
What makes this different from other Twi lessons?
Your tutors are in Ghana, not reading from a textbook abroad. You speak from week one instead of memorising for a month first. And every lesson is built around roleplays, because the goal isn’t to pass a test, it’s to hold a conversation with your family.
Will I actually be speaking after eight weeks?
Honestly? You won’t be fluent. Nobody is after eight weeks and anyone promising that is selling you something. What you will be able to do is greet people properly, introduce yourself, order food, and hold a simple conversation without freezing. For most people that’s the wall they’ve been stuck at for years.
